Chapter Seventeen

Ning Nanzhou only managed to steady himself by gripping the restroom handle. The short skirt swayed with him, exposing a long stretch of pale leg.
He yanked the skirt down and nearly developed the urge to kill Chen Dongdong. “If you ever send me something like this again, we’re no longer friends!”
“Holy crap! Is it really that serious?” Chen Dongdong sounded aggrieved. “I’ve sent you women’s clothes before, and you never said anything. Is it because you’ve found someone new and our relationship has faded?”
Ning Nanzhou took a deep breath and hung up. If he listened any longer, he really might murder his friend.
He slowly looked at their WeChat conversation. The two photographs of him were painfully conspicuous.
How was he supposed to explain that he hadn’t meant to send those pictures? Aaaaaah!
Should he say he had sent them by accident? Would the other person then assume he had some peculiar fetish? Should he say he had been hired to advertise them?
He stared at the photograph that focused exclusively on his legs. That would make it even harder to explain!
In the end, he decided to tell the truth and sent the message with a flushed face.
[Did You Study Today] I didn’t mean to send those kinds of pictures! My friend sent me these women’s clothes, and I thought you had sent them for me to take pictures in. I really don’t normally wear things like this!
This time, the other person replied quickly.
[Chi Yu] Which friend?
He hadn’t expected Chi Yu to focus on that, but considering how restrained the man was, perhaps it wasn’t so strange.
[Did You Study Today] My childhood friend who’s studying in England. We grew up together, and he’s always sending me strange things.
[Chi Yu] No matter how close you are, you shouldn’t wear clothes like that.
His tone resembled that of a parent patiently offering guidance. Embarrassed, Ning Nanzhou sent back an “Understood,” hoping he hadn’t left a bad impression.
Meanwhile, Chi Yu stared at the photographs for a long time.
In the pictures, the young man wore a tiny skirt. His legs, clad in white knee-high socks, were straight and perfectly proportioned. Even with his left hand tugging the skirt downward, it could not conceal his dazzlingly pale thighs, leaving an endless amount to the imagination.
Chi Yu’s gaze fell on the boy’s excessively slender waist. He silently cursed himself, then rose and went to the bathroom.

Ning Nanzhou brainwashed himself into forgetting the whole incident, opened his computer, and logged onto his livestream.
The moment he went live, the screen was flooded with messages.
[This streamer has no manners! He called me a duck! Everyone, stop watching his stream!]

That afternoon, Little Qiao had been dragged away for a trial, and only in the evening had he finally found a chance to expose South and reveal his true nature.
His profile signature even read, “Chi Yu and I are in a golden marriage.” How could the captain possibly like someone like this?
Yet the viewers in the livestream acted as though they had seen it all before.
[Hasn’t he always been classless? Does this really need exposing?]
[Is the person above pretending to be a loyal fan?]
[Judging by the profile, it’s an alternate account.]

Ning Nanzhou knew at once who it was. Raising an eyebrow, he retorted, “Weren’t you the one who said you were being forced to meet different wild men?”
Little Qiao had been about to type, “I was forced to attend the trial,” but if the viewers dug up his identity, he could only weakly reply, “Th-That still doesn’t mean you can call me a duck.”
[I’m dying. “I was forced to meet different wild men by you, but I’m not a duck.”]
[The livestreams in this section never fail to broaden my horizons.]
[I already knew there were plenty of ducks in this section. The male streamers in the dance category are practically shameless, but I didn’t realize there were this many ducks.]
Little Qiao, who had thought the livestream would deliver justice, was furious. What kind of idol had what kind of fans!
At that moment, Chen Dongdong called again. Ning Nanzhou pretended not to notice.
But Chen Dongdong called a second time, and Ning Nanzhou finally answered irritably. “You’d better have something important to say.”
“It’s not really anything important.” Chen Dongdong’s voice was soft. “I was worried you were actually angry with me. I promise I’ll never send you anything like that again. Don’t be mad at me, okay?”
Chen Dongdong was a rich second-generation heir raised in a jar of honey, guileless and gentle-voiced whenever he apologized. Ning Nanzhou gave a cold hum.
“I knew Xiaozhou was the best! I’ll come visit you during winter break,” Chen Dongdong said cheerfully. His voice suddenly faltered. “By the way, your mother hasn’t come looking for you, has she?”
Ning Nanzhou’s hand paused over the account he was logging into. After a moment, he said, “No.”
“That’s good.” Chen Dongdong breathed a sigh of relief. “After the way they treated you, now that you’ve been admitted to Shanghai University, don’t listen to her no matter how much she begs you to go back.”
Ning Nanzhou fell silent.
He did not know how to tell his well-protected friend that, even after he had been admitted to Shanghai University, Qi Yidan had never begged him to return. She already had a wonderful family of her own.
But sensing the deep concern in his friend’s voice, he gave a soft hum. “No matter how much she begs, I won’t go back.”
After ending the call, he stared at his phone for a long time, then picked up his thermos and swallowed a pill.
As it happened, he was in the mood to curse someone. He had no idea who had posted online the remarks he had made mocking Qin Yong, but the livestream was soon flooded with Qin Yong’s fans.
[Leaving FKW is something worth celebrating for Qin Yong? You think you can beat him one-handed? These days, every idiot can get online.]
[Do you know what my brother has accomplished? Three cup titles, seven league titles, two world championships, and a World Championship MVP. If Chi Yu hadn’t stopped him from playing Ranger, he could have taken the World Championship Finals MVP.]
[Isn’t this the Chi Yu fan who trended before? Desperate to prove his loyalty to his master and beg to get laid.]
If Ning Nanzhou had never read the information Chi Yu had compiled, he might have believed that Qin Yong had some ability.
But he had read the detailed analyses page by page. He knew exactly how much blood, sweat, and effort Chi Yu had poured into the team—and how little substance there was behind Qin Yong’s championships.
He answered them one by one.
“These days, every idiot can get online? I was talking about you, idiot.”
“Three cup titles, seven league titles, and two world championships? You’re making me laugh. First in economic output, dead last in damage, and you still have the nerve to boast that he’s the best top laner in the country. As for saying he wasn’t allowed to play Ranger—he’d have to know how to play it first. With a twenty-seven percent win rate, why would anyone let your brother’s useless brain play him?”
“And there’s one more thing I’d like to clarify seriously.” The young man’s tone became solemn. “I don’t need to prove my loyalty and beg to get laid. I’m begging to get laid every day. Do you have a problem with that?”
Qin Yong’s fans were stunned by the boy’s shamelessness.
[You keep talking about getting laid. Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?]
[Don’t give this kind of person any more attention. With that huge mouth, I thought he was the best player on the national server. Turns out he’s only Diamond.]
[He’s the best player on the national server? I’ll call him Dad!]
[I’ll even call him Grandpa!]

Watching the fans fight over who would become his son, Ning Nanzhou raised an eyebrow and accepted the challenge. “Sure. If you make it, you call me Dad. If you don’t, I’ll call you Dad.”
Outside the screen, Little Qiao’s feelings were complicated. He disliked South, certainly, but seeing the other man surrounded and attacked for defending Chi Yu stirred a little sympathy in him—especially since South’s voice was still somewhat hoarse.
He had no idea what kind of drug the captain had given him.
On impulse, he sent South a private message.
[The Captain Will Never Retire] You and Chi Yu are impossible.
Ning Nanzhou had just finished arguing with Qin Yong’s fans. When he saw the private message, he was bewildered.
[South] ?
Little Qiao knew the other man would have trouble accepting it, so in a rare act of generosity, he extended a helping hand.
[The Captain Will Never Retire] I saw that you’ll have to call someone Dad if you lose. I’m feeling magnanimous, so I’ll help you out. Want to team up and play ranked?
As a support player in the league’s first tier, Little Qiao rarely took the initiative to team up with anyone. Usually, people begged him to play with them.
He assumed South would be overwhelmed with gratitude.
Instead, the brat sent back a single sentence.
[South] You’re too bad.
What?!
As he angrily began typing a reply, a gentle voice sounded behind him.
“Little Qiao, what are you doing?”
Little Qiao jolted. “I’m looking for a top laner for the team. Captain, you have no idea—ever since Qin Yong left, so many people have been saying that our team is full of old, weak, sick, and disabled players, and that we won’t even make it to the playoffs.”
“Do we need to watch during practice?” Chi Yu calmly announced. “Add an hour of training today.”
Little Qiao glanced at Chi Yu, then at South’s profile signature, and silently cursed the fans for being just like their idol.
—
Ning Nanzhou did not truly think Little Qiao was bad. Supports were simply not good at one-on-one duels. His main concern was protecting his identity.
Besides, ranked games in the new version were easier than he had expected. He had reached Master in a single evening without needing to team up with anyone. After washing up, he fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, a phone call woke him.
“Student, your package has arrived,” said the deliveryman.
Still groggy, Ning Nanzhou opened his eyes and went downstairs to collect it.
Because of what had happened before, he froze for a moment when he received the parcel. He checked the sender carefully before opening it.
Inside was a small box.
He let out an almost imperceptible sigh of relief. But when he opened the box, he froze again.
Nestled inside was a beautiful platinum necklace.
Chi Yu’s English name was engraved on it.
The words “Take a picture wearing it for me to see” suddenly surfaced in his mind.
Was Chi Yu asking him to wear this necklace and take a picture for him?
But it seemed as though the necklace belonged to Chi Yu.
