Chapter 16: Two Soul Bones

“Um... Your Highness, aren’t you taking these two with you?”
Li Xun pointed at the two men groaning on the ground and spoke softly to Prince Xue Xing.
What the other man had said at the end was clearly an attempt to smear him and his sect.
There was no way Li Xun would let such an opportunity to strike back pass.
“Someone will naturally take them to the infirmary later.”
Prince Xue Xing stopped, his expression turning somewhat unpleasant.
“Country bumpkin, why would we need to trouble ourselves with something like this?”
Xue Beng glared at Li Xun with undisguised contempt.
They were members of the imperial family, and guards accompanied them at all times. For matters like this, they did not need to give any orders; someone would naturally take care of it.
“But... weren’t you here because of these two?”
Li Xun looked at Prince Xue Xing innocently and asked in a timid voice.
“Fourth Prince, Your Highness, I’ll take Ge Rong and the other student to the infirmary. There’s no need to trouble either of you.”
As Li Xun and the others remained locked in a stalemate with Xue Xing, the crew-cut teacher hurriedly spoke up.
“Allow me to thank you on behalf of their elders, Teacher.”
Prince Xue Xing turned around and cupped his hands toward the crew-cut teacher.
“No need... no need. It’s only what I should do.”
The crew-cut teacher waved his hands repeatedly.
“What a toady.”
After watching Xue Xing and Xue Beng leave, Li Xun glanced at the teacher and cursed inwardly.
As if sensing Li Xun’s gaze, the crew-cut teacher hurriedly forced a smile.
“Student Li Xun, I failed to understand the situation earlier, which led me to speak improperly.
“As a teacher, that was unacceptable. I apologize to you.”
Li Xun was rendered somewhat speechless.
He had initially thought this teacher was Prince Xue Xing’s lackey. Who could have guessed that he was merely a shameless fence-sitter, eager to please both sides?
...
The incident in the Sky-Level Classroom spread with astonishing speed.
Even the three members of the Education Committee were alerted.
Meng Shenji personally visited Li Xun’s dormitory to offer his concern. Only after seeing that neither Li Xun nor Ning Rongrong appeared to have suffered did he finally breathe a sigh of relief.
He also informed them that, because the teacher had failed in his duty of supervision, he had already been dismissed and placed under investigation. Li Xun and Ning Rongrong could therefore rest easy and continue attending classes.

The students were also abuzz with discussion.
Some said that Li Xun had done the right thing, while others felt that he had gone too far.
Although everyone held different opinions, they shared one unspoken understanding:
Within the academy, it was best to avoid contact with Li Xun and Ge Rong’s respective groups whenever possible.
One group belonged to one of the most powerful sects on the continent. The other consisted of the imperial family and the foremost aristocrats who controlled the rise and fall of their clans.
To blindly curry favor with either side could easily lead to the destruction of one’s entire family.
Li Xun did not pay much attention to the situation at the academy.
He merely committed Xue Xing and Xue Beng silently to memory and trained even harder.
Ning Rongrong was influenced by him as well and gradually became more diligent.
In the days that followed, the two of them remained cooped up in their dormitory, cultivating constantly. Only when Ning Fengzhi and Sword Douluo arrived did they slow their training somewhat.
“Xiao Xun, I’ve heard everything. You two have been treated unfairly.”
Ning Fengzhi patted Li Xun on the shoulder and spoke gently.
“Teacher, I’m fine. It’s just that Rongrong suffered a little.”
Li Xun glanced at Ning Rongrong, who had thrown herself into Sword Douluo’s arms.
“That girl Rongrong has been spoiled within the sect. It’s good for her to experience some setbacks now, so she won’t suffer a major loss in the future. As for you, you handled this matter extremely well.”
Ning Fengzhi sighed softly.
When he had sent Li Xun and Ning Rongrong to Heaven Dou Academy, he had never expected something like this to happen.
Fortunately, Li Xun was clever and had reacted the moment he noticed something was wrong.
Otherwise, not only would Ning Rongrong have been humiliated, but the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect would also have suffered some negative consequences.
“Teacher, it was only what I should have done. But what will happen next?”
Li Xun looked up at Ning Fengzhi.
“You and Rongrong can focus on studying here without worry.”
Ning Fengzhi chuckled. He took two spirit bones from his soul tool and held them out before Li Xun.
“These two spirit bones are the imperial family’s compensation. Marshal Ge Long and Prince Xue Xing provided them.”
Li Xun glanced at Sword Douluo, who was teasing Ning Rongrong.
He understood at once.
It seemed that Ning Fengzhi and Sword Douluo had gone to see Emperor Xue Ye first.
“This is a ten-thousand-year head spirit bone. It comes with the spirit skill Clear Thoughts, which helps a soul master judge gains and losses during battle.”
“This is a twenty-thousand-year right-leg spirit bone. It comes with the skill Swift. Xiao Xun, choose one. The remaining one will go to Rongrong.”

With a smile, Ning Fengzhi slightly raised the head spirit bone.
“However, I recommend that you choose the head spirit bone. Don’t be misled by its lower age. It is far more precious than the leg bone and suits you better as well.”
Spirit bones were produced when spirit beasts were hunted, and their drop rate was extraordinarily low.
Often, even after hunting dozens or hundreds of spirit beasts, one might not appear.
Among them, external spirit bones, torso bones, and head bones were the rarest of all.
Although this head spirit bone was only ten thousand years old, it was far more precious than an ordinary ten-thousand-year spirit bone.
This was the first time Li Xun had ever seen a spirit bone.
The two spirit bones in Ning Fengzhi’s hands were as magnificent as gemstones. If one observed them closely, one could even sense the dense spirit power within.
“Thank you for your kindness, Teacher, but I cannot accept these spirit bones. I also recommend that Rongrong not absorb them.”
Li Xun withdrew his gaze from the spirit bones and looked toward Ning Fengzhi.
“Hmm?”
Ning Fengzhi was startled. Then, after thinking it over, he understood.
“Xiao Xun, do you feel that the ages of these two spirit bones are too low?”
“Yes, Teacher. Recently, I learned through my studies that a good spirit bone can raise a soul master’s rank and improve their physical constitution.
“And an improvement in physical constitution also affects the age of the spirit rings a soul master can absorb.”
Li Xun pointed toward the spirit bones in Ning Fengzhi’s hands.
“Teacher, the farther a soul master advances, the more difficult it becomes to improve. With Rongrong’s and my talents, it will be difficult for us to become peerless powerhouses on the continent through cultivation alone.
“When that time comes, a spirit bone capable of raising our potential ceiling will show its true value.”
The number of spirit bones a person could absorb was limited. The head was an especially important part of the body. There might be ways to replace spirit bones in other locations, but certainly not the one in the skull.
Even the leg bone seemed too low in age to Li Xun.
“Xiao Xun, the sect possesses quite a few low-grade spirit bones, but only a handful of high-level ones. Finding one that suits you also requires luck and opportunity. With the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect’s current wealth, we have collected only a few spirit bones suitable for me. The same is true of your Sword Grandpa and Bone Grandpa.”
Ning Fengzhi placed the spirit bones on the table and sighed.
“At their current levels, the improvement gained from absorbing ordinary spirit bones would be negligible. That is why those positions have remained vacant, in the hope that one day fortune will favor them and they will encounter spirit bones compatible with them.”
Li Xun turned his head toward Sword Douluo. He had once wondered why none of the people from the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect had ever displayed spirit bones.
It turned out that they had simply been terribly unlucky and had never found ones suitable for them.
Seeing Li Xun’s reaction, Ning Fengzhi could not help but laugh.
He had used Sword Douluo and Bone Douluo as examples precisely to demonstrate how rare spirit bones were and dispel Li Xun’s unrealistic expectations.
If they could, who would not want to give the best things to the younger generation?
“Teacher, how about this? Let us leave these two spirit bones with you for now. If we truly gain nothing in the end, we can absorb them then.”
