The Universal Crossing Consultation Office, Human Crossing Inquiry Section. To the right of Wei Xiaoping, the spectral hand, though slowly being invaded by the faint red halo and growing heavier, he stubbornly continued to caress the magical sphere, his soul-eyes locked every second upon the magical mirror on the wall.
When he saw his former self, Wei Xiaofan, shedding sorrowful tears after losing his chance at an award due to the clandestine manipulations of Li Liangtian and Luo Dengfang, Wei Xiaoping, too, unknowingly let fall gray-white tears.
Beside him, Yang Zhijin, also moved by Wei Xiaofan’s ordeal in his previous life, explained things to Wei Xiaoping, occasionally pounding the table in indignation, exclaiming, “This Luo Dengfang, as a school principal, to commit such vile and sordid acts, is utterly shameful! Truly disgraceful!”
“I never imagined that my former old friend, Wei Xiaofan, would suffer such hardships, with such a clever mind, only to be exploited by someone like Luo Dengfang! Luo Dengfang is truly a beast in human form!” Wei Xiaoping said angrily.
Yang Zhijin’s ghost replied, “Ah! But in that era of our former lives, such things were common! There was nothing to be done. There were those who suffered worse than Wei Xiaofan! General Wei, your old friend Wei Xiaofan’s misfortune is actually not the worst. Didn’t Luo Dengfang say he would allocate the aid for poor students to Wei Xiaofan, who would be entering high school next semester? So, at least someone would help pay his tuition—a stroke of luck, really. If Wei Xiaofan does get the financial assistance when he enters high school, then he’ll have no worries about tuition and living expenses.”
“Brother Yang, you’re quite right! Luo Dengfang does have a bit of conscience left,” Wei Xiaoping said.
Yang Zhijin added, “Yes, Principal Luo at least has some conscience. If it were a principal with a greedy, heartless nature, he wouldn’t even give the aid to Wei Xiaofan. Then Wei Xiaofan would have to scrape together his fees himself, making things even harder for him!”
Wei Xiaoping asked, “In that class of Wei Xiaofan’s previous life, he was the only one from a rural background, and his family was the poorest. Logically, the aid should go to him. Would the principal really dare deny it? Would someone really dare to embezzle aid meant for poor students? If so, such a person would have truly lost all conscience!”
Yang Zhijin replied, “General Wei, in our previous era, there really were such principals! They might not embezzle the funds directly, but to curry favor with certain people, they’d allocate the aid to the children of leaders they wanted to please, or even to their own relatives. Such principals were even worse!”
Wei Xiaoping was shocked, “Is that really true?!”

Yang Zhijin continued, “Not only is it true, but it happened often! It wasn’t just with aid for poor students that leaders played favorites—there were other cases as well. In our previous lives, during that era, the Republic was built by both rulers and people, with generous welfare. The state allocated funds to help low-income families, but since those quotas were limited, some leaders would give them to their own relatives who were already living comfortably, or even take them for themselves.”
Wei Xiaoping sighed deeply, “Brother Yang, hearing you say this, I really doubt whether my old friend Wei Xiaofan will get the aid next semester. After all, there are still a few months before high school starts. Who knows if Principal Luo will change his mind in that time?”
Yang Zhijin said, “Whether Wei Xiaofan in the previous life gets the aid or not, just keep watching and you’ll see.”
Wei Xiaoping said, “But the red halo on my soul is growing stronger. My body in the living world, unconscious and injured, might soon awaken! It seems I won’t be able to see the rest of my and Wei Xiaofan’s high school journey in our previous lives.”
Upon hearing this, Yang Zhijin turned to look at Wei Xiaoping and saw that indeed, half of Wei Xiaoping’s soul was now enveloped by the red glow, his hand caressing the magical sphere growing slow and sluggish.
“Congratulations, General Wei. Your soul will soon return to your body, and you’ll once again live freely in the world of the living. Unlike us, who linger in this shadowy underworld with not a hint of vitality,” Yang Zhijin said, somewhat sadly.
“But I don’t want to return yet. I want to keep watching my previous life, to know how I and Wei Xiaofan died there, and how we came to be reborn and cross into this current world.”
“General Wei, you’re a strange ghost! Most spirits who come here seek to cross over or be reborn elsewhere, but you want to watch your past life! What’s the point of that? You can’t return to it.”
Wei Xiaoping said, “Though I can’t go back, in this world, didn’t Wei Xiaofan and I reincarnate together as brothers? Yet here, he stabbed me! I remember the elders saying that if you become enemies or are harmed by someone in this life, it’s because you hurt them in a previous life and hadn’t repaid your debt. So you must repay it in another world. That’s why I want to see my past life’s history, to see if I ever hurt Wei Xiaofan or owed him anything.”
Yang Zhijin replied, “That makes sense! But right now your body is being rescued, and about to fully revive. Once it wakes, your soul will leave the underworld and return to your body, and you’ll no longer see your previous life’s history. There’s nothing you can do to change that, so just let it happen naturally.”

Hearing Yang Zhijin’s words, Wei Xiaoping felt a pang of regret. So, while his physical body had not yet awakened and his soul was not fully engulfed by the red halo, he kept stroking the magical sphere, speeding up as he gazed at the magical mirror on the wall.
Just then, Luo Zhifu’s ghost drifted in, panting and calling out, “General Wei, quick—quick, come outside with me—”
Seeing Luo Zhifu so anxious, Wei Xiaoping immediately asked, “Brother Luo, what is it? I haven’t finished watching my past life’s history yet. Where are you taking me?”
“The King of the Underworld has sent an envoy to find you!” Luo Zhifu replied.
“The King of the Underworld wants me? Brother Luo, did the envoy say why?” Wei Xiaoping asked, surprised.
“An envoy from the King of the Underworld coming for someone? That’s a first! Brother Luo, are you sure you didn’t make a mistake?” Yang Zhijin remarked.
“No mistake! General Wei, hurry and come with me. Yang Zhijin, I’ll take General Wei out first, you tidy up the room and close the door behind us.”
Luo Zhifu led Wei Xiaoping out of the private room, and together, half running and half floating, they flew towards the main gate.
