Chapter 118: Things Are Getting Interesting

No one expected Li Huihui to actually pull the trigger in such a situation, and no one else knew that she had done so unintentionally. They simply assumed she had not let go of her hatred for Tian Yaopeng and was intent on taking his life right then and there.

Click!

The sound of the firing pin striking an empty chamber echoed through the interrogation room. A moment later, Tian Yaopeng remained standing there, completely unharmed.

This bizarre turn of events left everyone stunned. While they didn't understand what had happened, they felt a collective sense of relief. Bai Zeshao took the opportunity to snatch the gun from the bewildered Li Huihui, and he immediately realized why the shot hadn't fired: the magazine was empty.

Huff, puff!

Tian Yaopeng, having survived the ordeal, stood there gasping for air, his forehead drenched in sweat. That moment had been truly traumatic for him. Even back when he was in street shootouts with the Red Party, he had never felt such lingering terror. To die in a fair fight on the battlefield was one thing, but to be killed in his own stronghold by a female student in such a humiliating fashion—he would never have been able to rest in peace.

As his emotions settled slightly, a surge of fury flooded his mind. He reached out and drew his own sidearm.

Click!

He chambered a round and pressed the muzzle against Li Huihui’s forehead, sneering, "You foul bitch, you slut! Let's see who can save you now!"

The situation took another chaotic turn, leaving everyone who had barely recovered from the previous incident in a state of renewed shock. Instinctively, all eyes turned to Bai Zeshao.

Bai Zeshao felt a pounding headache. It would have been one thing if Li Huihui had managed to kill the man, but now, not only was he still alive, but things had escalated to this point. He offered a bitter smile and said to Tian Yaopeng, "Team Leader Tian, put the gun down. You should have guessed a little bit about her background by now."

"Don't give me that talk! I don't give a damn about her background anymore. All I know is that this woman tried to kill me!"

Bang!

In his agitation, Tian Yaopeng fired a shot directly into the ceiling. The deafening blast startled everyone.

However, as Bai Zeshao watched the enraged Tian Yaopeng, he felt a flicker of suspicion. Even in a fit of rage, a man with Tian Yaopeng’s level of cunning wouldn't be this impulsive. Otherwise, he wouldn't have survived this long. Perhaps he had been genuinely furious at first, but he was certainly calm now. Bai Zeshao looked into Tian Yaopeng’s eyes and saw no turbulent waves—only a chilling stillness. This was not the look of a man blinded by rage.

Realizing this, Bai Zeshao felt more confident. To avoid any further complications or the risk of Tian Yaopeng truly jumping off the deep end, he spoke directly: "Team Leader Tian, tell us what you want. Lay your terms out. You know as well as I do that you aren't going to pull that trigger, right?"

Tian Yaopeng glanced at the determined Bai Zeshao and couldn't help but inwardly praise him. He was right; he wouldn't pull the trigger. If he actually killed her, there would likely be no place left for him in Shanning. He had once been an undercover agent against the Red Party, causing their underground organization to suffer heavy losses; if he were to now alienate the Nationalist Party as well, his fate would be grim indeed.

However, he needed a guarantee of his own safety. Otherwise, he would inevitably face disciplinary action from his superiors after this, not to mention the follow-up revenge from Li Huihui. Especially with that bastard Bai Zeshao around—his words earlier had undoubtedly provided Li Huihui with a perfect opening. With that in mind, Tian Yaopeng spoke: "I want a guarantee."

"What kind of guarantee?" Bai Zeshao asked, unsurprised.

"I don't know how deep your connections go, but I don't want to face insane retaliation from you or the forces behind you." Tian Yaopeng shifted his gaze from Bai Zeshao to Li Huihui, who was still under his gun.

"That’s impossible," Bai Zeshao interrupted before Li Huihui could even speak.

Tian Yaopeng ignored him, staring only at Li Huihui, waiting for her answer.

"Fine," Li Huihui uttered softly.

"Hui-zi!" Bai Zeshao cried out anxiously, truly stunned that she had agreed.

"I can promise not to retaliate against you, but there are conditions and a time limit," Li Huihui continued.

"What are they?"

"For one year, I will not seek revenge. And the condition is that you cannot move against me, either—and that includes Xiao Bai." At the end, she even included Bai Zeshao.

"Agreed." Without a moment’s hesitation, Tian Yaopeng accepted the terms. As he spoke, he holstered his weapon. As for whether Li Huihui was being sincere or how much her promise was worth, Tian Yaopeng didn't harbor any high hopes. Right now, he just needed a face-saving exit and some breathing room.

Bai Zeshao looked at Li Huihui and sighed. "Hui-zi, let's go. I imagine the people here to pick you up have arrived."

Bai Zeshao and Li Huihui walked toward the exit of the interrogation room. Just before stepping out, Bai Zeshao turned back to the others. "I don't want to hear a single word about today’s events outside these walls. I believe this is also the wish of Captain Wu. Do you understand?"

"Understood," the group replied in unison.

Bai Zeshao didn't linger, quickly catching up to Li Huihui. The members of the Third Team followed closely behind, leaving the interrogation room.

In silence, Bai Zeshao and Li Huihui walked out of the Special Service Office building. Bai Zeshao immediately spotted three cars parked outside the iron gates. "Those must be the people here for you, right?"

Li Huihui nodded calmly in confirmation.

As soon as they stepped out of the agency, someone stepped forward to guide Li Huihui to the middle vehicle. The people already inside the car made no move to step out, and Bai Zeshao didn't mind; he was, after all, just a small fry.

However, just as the car door opened, he caught a glimpse of a man in his fifties sitting in the back. Because he couldn't see the face clearly, he could only estimate the man's age.

Watching the three cars slowly disappear from view, Bai Zeshao waved his hand and said to Monkey, who was beside him, "Find out whose motorcade that is."

"Team Leader, no need to check. I know whose it is," Monkey said, clicking his tongue with a look of longing and admiration. "You probably didn't notice the license plates. Using military plates on civilian sedans—that’s unique to the Wen family in Shanning. It’s definitely them."

"The Wen family?" Bai Zeshao muttered to himself.

"That's right, the Wen family," Monkey confirmed.

"Things are getting interesting. It looks like I’ll be dealing with the Wen family quite a bit lately," Bai Zeshao said with a playful, meaningful smirk.

With that, he turned and headed back into the Special Service Office.
