Chapter 119: Disappearance

Just as Bai Zeshao returned to the Secret Service, Tian Yaopeng also received the news. However, upon learning that Li Huihui was backed by the Wen family, his heart skipped a beat.

He had considered that Li Huihui might have a profound background—after all, Wu Zhengke had stepped in personally, implying someone of great significance was involved—but he never expected it to be the Wen family.

Tian Yaopeng was intimately familiar with every prominent figure in Shanning; he even had a rough idea about their mistresses and illegitimate children. Although the Secret Service was a powerful institution, there were certain people who simply could not be offended. Long ago, Tian had memorized the list of untouchables in Shanning.

The Wen family was among those, positioned right at the top of that small circle. Yet, despite his careful calculations, he had somehow ended up offending them. In all his knowledge of the Wen family, there was no mention of anyone named Li Huihui.

However, the motorcade that had arrived to collect her was undeniably theirs; only core members of the Wen family could authorize the use of those specific vehicles.

With a grim expression, Tian Yaopeng returned to his office and slammed the door shut. It wasn't until an hour later that he opened the door, his face calm, and summoned his Second Team inside.

"Mobilize every resource at your disposal. Investigate this Li Huihui—check her identity, her background, her political leanings, and focus specifically on her relationship with the Wen family. Is that understood?" Tian ordered.

"Yes," the team responded in unison.

Then, one member looked at Tian and asked, "Chief, will investigating Li Huihui provoke the Wen family? We aren't afraid, but there's no need to offend them, is there?"

"Do you think we haven't already offended them? We didn't see what happened in the interrogation room, but we heard enough," Tian sneered. "You all saw that girl’s temperament. She dared to hold a gun to my head on our own turf. Do you really think she’s a pushover? After suffering such a grievance, do you think she’ll let us off?"

"Chief, that was only because Chief Bai was there, which is why she felt so emboldened," a member muttered softly.

"Bullshit. You really think that Bai Zeshao can keep me under his thumb?" Tian spat, looking dismissive.

"Chief, what about the agreement you made? Even if she wants revenge, she has to wait a year. By then, it’ll be a forgotten matter," another person added.

"Naive. Do you really think she and I are going to honor that so-called agreement?" A flash of murderous intent crossed Tian’s eyes as he spoke.

"Chief, then what should we do?"

"We only have one path left: eliminate Li Huihui before the Wen family's retaliation arrives. If we do it cleanly, even if the Wen family suspects us, what can they do? Do you think they would actually dare to clash with the Secret Service?" Tian spoke with a tone of arrogance.

He was right. The Wen family was powerful, but they would never dare to go head-to-head with the Secret Service. Let alone the Wen family, even many powerful figures in the military ground their teeth in frustration at the Secret Service, but what could they do? They had to endure it. The Secret Service was, after all, the Emperor’s watchdog. One doesn't beat a dog without considering its master, and this particular dog had exceptionally sharp claws.

Tian’s words struck home. They knew that while they weren't the masterminds, they were accomplices in the inhumane torture Li Huihui had endured. Since retaliation was inevitable, these desperate men of the Secret Service felt no fear—only a growing, cold ruthlessness.

"Chief, tell us how to do it."

"Exactly, just give the order, and we’ll follow it."

"Give the order!"

"Give the order!"

Tian waved his hand to quiet the excited crowd. "As I said, finish the tasks at hand, and keep the Wen family under surveillance. Brothers, act quickly. We don't have much time."

The members of the Second Team dispersed quickly. Tian Yaopeng sat on the sofa, feeling exhausted. There was something he hadn't told them.

Their time was indeed short, but his own time was likely even shorter. He didn't fear the Wen family's revenge from the outside as much as he feared the disciplinary actions from the Secret Service leadership—something he couldn't escape.

The incident had just occurred, and while the higher-ups hadn't moved yet, Tian knew it was only a matter of time. The punishment could come tomorrow or even the next moment. The severity would depend on the Wen family's attitude, but it would undoubtedly be heavy. He would certainly lose his position as team leader, and once he lost his influence, no one would help him.

The so-called brothers of the Second Team, without his supervision, would likely turn on him the moment he fell. His plan would be ruined.

That was why he said time was running out, urging them to quickly investigate Li Huihui and her connection to the Wen family.

The next day. Early morning.

Before Bai Zeshao had even risen, his home phone rang. Still drowsy, he picked it up, only to hear Wu Zhengke’s furious roar: "Xiao Bai, you have ten minutes—get to the Secret Service immediately!"

"Captain, what happened—" Before Bai could finish, Wu hung up.

As he dressed, he pondered the situation. He couldn't fathom what could have caused Wu to be so enraged, especially so early in the morning—a time when Wu would usually still be at home having breakfast.

Ten minutes later, Bai arrived at the Secret Service. He bypassed his own office and headed straight for Wu’s. As he pushed the door open, he was hit by the oppressive atmosphere inside.

Apart from Wu Zhengke, the First Team leader, Ye Mao, and the Second Team leader, Tian Yaopeng, were both standing before the desk with their heads bowed.

Seeing this, Bai knew something major had happened and spoke with extra caution: "Captain, I'm here. Has something happened?"

"Hmph!" Wu Zhengke glared at Bai and let out a cold snort. He slammed his hand onto the desk and roared, "Bai Zeshao, I’m asking you—how did you handle yesterday's matter? I gave you full authority to handle it, and this is how you repay me?"

Bai’s heart sank. Could something have happened to Li Huihui? Facing Wu’s predatory gaze, Bai had no choice but to bite the bullet. "It was handled perfectly. Li Huihui was picked up by her people."

"Perfect, my ass! Li Huihui has gone missing—as of this morning!" A furious Wu Zhengke grabbed an ashtray from his desk and smashed it against the floor.
