Chapter 38: The First Wife Who Spends Money Like Water (5)
The resentment shrank back and edged aside, no longer crackling with electricity or rumbling with thunder, now docile and subdued.
May had arrived, and the weather was growing hotter.
“Doctor, how is she?” Xue Ci asked anxiously, his nervousness barely concealing the hope in his eyes, as if he were about to grasp something precious just beyond his reach.
“My lord, madam is not in serious danger. Her circulation is somewhat sluggish, a result of an imbalance between Yin and Yang within her body,” the doctor said, folding the silk cloth he’d used to take the woman’s pulse.
He continued, “In my opinion, this may be linked to an internal endocrine disorder; the cause could be emotional distress, irregular diet, or overwork and exhaustion, leading to dysfunction of the organs and a disruption in the flow of energy and fluids. She must be carefully nurtured to recover her health.”
As he spoke, the doctor wrote a prescription and handed it to the husband, noticing the man’s anxious expression. He emphasized again, “Do not worry. It is nothing serious.”
Lin Wanyin’s face went pale as she listened. The tension and apprehension she’d felt moments before vanished in an instant, replaced by an inexplicable disappointment.
Clearly...
She raised her eyes, looking at Xue Ci, whose gaze was growing more complicated.
“Will it affect her ability to bear children?” Xue Ci asked abruptly, gripping the prescription tightly. Lin Wanyin withdrew her gaze, feeling an overwhelming sense of irony. How could she have harbored such laughable hopes?
The doctor frowned at the question. “You are both still young; it would be best for madam to recover first. If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave. You may take the prescription to the pharmacy later.”
With that, the doctor hurried away.
For a moment, only Lin Wanyin and Xue Ci remained in the room.
“Emotional distress?” Xue Ci’s voice was cold and flat, making Lin Wanyin’s body tense.
She wanted to explain, but no words came. She could only remain silent.
“Lin Wanyin, don’t test my patience.” He tossed the prescription to the floor and strode over, gripping her throat. “You know what happens when you defy me!”
Sensing the clear threat in his tone, Lin Wanyin’s eyes filled with tears. “I didn’t—mmph!”
Her lips were seized, her eyes wide with shock.
Moments later, a gold ingot was tossed onto the bedding. “I’ll give you one more month. If I don’t see the result I want, you know the consequences.”
“All right.” Humiliated, she watched his departing back and uttered the word softly.
She shouldn’t have these thoughts—just as he’d warned her—not even the faintest hope...
He already had a family.
But she simply couldn’t help herself!
——
“Miss, Xue Ci has been visiting Moonlight Lane more and more frequently,” Mufeng reported as she fanned beside her mistress.
“I’ve heard Lin Wanyin once had a childhood sweetheart, a neighbor’s son,” Jiang Youyou said, putting aside her brush and handing the scroll to Mufeng. “No matter what it takes, bring that man before Lin Wanyin.”
In the story, the second male lead gave everything in silence, doing more than a few sordid deeds in secret just to ensure Lin Wanyin’s happiness. In the end, he became the male lead’s loyal shadow.
Such reckless devotion for love was foolish to the core.
So, it was best to avoid these entanglements of the heart. As for so-called undying fidelity—how many in this world truly possess it?
She had completed at least a thousand missions, yet she’d rarely seen a good man.
“Host, aren’t we going to do something about the male lead?” Little Seven queried, glancing at the dense aura of resentment and the unmoving hatred meter.
“Maybe I can get you more money. Here, silver is enough to kill a man, but remember to leave them breathing,” Little Seven added. Killing would risk breaking the world.
“Go away.” Jiang Youyou found it amusing. Little Seven’s obsession with using money to solve every problem ran deep.
Three days later, childhood sweethearts reunited.
