Chapter 46: The Original Wife Spends Money Like Water (13)
“What woman?” Xue Ci’s face flashed with anger. “A-You, have you lost your mind from sleep?”
“Yuehua Lane, Osmanthus Courtyard,” Jiang Youyou replied with a slight smile on her lips. “Why, is Young Master Xue reluctant to part with her?”
Xue Ci’s eyes darkened, his hand in his sleeve clenched tightly. This frail invalid had actually found out Lin Wanyin’s address! He had truly underestimated her. Since that was the case, this Jiang family woman must not be allowed to stay any longer!
“If you can’t bear to part with your beloved, shall I kill her for you?” Her airy tone hit Xue Ci precisely where it hurt.
“Don’t you dare!” Xue Ci’s voice was furious. “Jiang Youyou, try and lay a finger on her!”
“If you can’t abandon your beauty, then I have no choice but to abandon you,” she said, crimson lips parting in a soft sigh.
“What are you planning to do, Jiang Youyou?” At her words, Xue Ci instinctively took a step back, his brows furrowing as he warily eyed the sword before him.
“Look at you—what a pitiful sight!” Jiang Youyou sneered. “I used to think you were something extraordinary, but it turns out you’re just a coward!”
To be mocked by a woman he’d never even bothered to look at properly—Xue Ci could only hate himself for not knowing martial arts, or he would have strangled her right then and there!
[Congratulations, Host! Five points of hatred received! Total: fifty-five!]
Mufeng sneered and handed over a letter.
A sense of foreboding washed over Xue Ci. When he saw the glaring words “Divorce Letter” on the envelope, his vision spun and his blood surged to his heart in a rush. “Jiang Youyou, you’re giving me a divorce letter?!”
“You, firstly, are incapable of providing an heir—making you childless; secondly, you have failed to uphold the duties of a husband, keeping a mistress and committing adultery. For either of these reasons, I am fully justified in discarding you. Do you object?” Jiang Youyou’s argument was clear and irrefutable, and both charges left Xue Ci with nothing to say, though veins bulged in his forehead and rage twisted his face.
“Jiang Youyou, without me, with your sickly body, who would ever want you? The fact that I chose you is already your good fortune. You should be grateful I picked you. Don’t push your luck—you’re just a merchant, a lowly person by birth. What gives you the right to divorce me?” Xue Ci’s words were delivered with venom, each one meant to wound, but they had not the slightest effect on Jiang Youyou. She stood steadily beneath her umbrella, her pale face showing not a trace of anger.
Not seeing the reaction he wanted, Xue Ci was left seething with indignation. Why should this invalid be able to cast him off? Other than him, who would want her? Where did she find such audacity?
“Because you were the one who shamelessly insisted on marrying into my family,” Jiang Youyou replied, a smile playing at her lips as she stated the fact plainly, watching Xue Ci’s transformation from smug certainty to utter exasperation as if she were watching a play.
Marrying into her family, marrying into her family—always those words! Lately, this woman never let him forget it; it had become the nightmare that haunted his restless nights.
He should have been a favored son of heaven, but his family’s decline had forced his hand.
Now, compelled to marry a merchant’s daughter, it had become the very handle she used to oppress him. How utterly ridiculous! He should never have shown mercy; had he simply killed her back then, the fortune would still be his!
His sinister glare did nothing to frighten Jiang Youyou; if anything, she found it amusing. “And how much better are you? For a bit of gold and silver, you were willing to surrender a man’s dignity. Truly, you disgrace the integrity of scholars everywhere. Surely, they must be ashamed to count you among their ranks.”
[Beep beep! Congratulations, Host, another ten points of hatred gained—total now sixty-five!]
The resentment in the air was positively delighted, thunder and lightning abating, colors fading away. What a thorough and satisfying humiliation!
Naiqi: For stepping on a sore spot, trust in the Jiang family’s number one sharp-tongued host. She alone could talk a whole crowd to death.
Her fighting power was truly formidable.
In the end, Xue Ci could only storm off in a fury, his sleeve flicking behind him.
