Chapter 3: Too Deeply Immersed
April clutched her clothes in fright, trembling as she said, “Mom, I’m your good baby April, please don’t eat me!”
April was gambling.
She was gambling with the sinister mother before her, the Mother of the Hungry Spirits from the Hungry Spirit Path.
The Mother of the Hungry Spirits was wildly maternal, fiercely protective of her children.
And now, April was her child.
“Yes, you are my child too,” the sinister mother suddenly realized, scooping April up. “You must be hungry. Mommy will cook for you!”
In Room 40, where April was, many people were watching the livestream.
When the sinister mother settled April and her offspring at the wooden table and then went to the kitchen to prepare a meal, the rotating comment section exploded.
“This little girl actually survived! How did she manage that?”
“She must have recognized the Mother of the Hungry Spirits and cleverly exploited her maternal instincts to escape death. This child is remarkable; maybe she’ll be the last one standing in the orphanage!”
“This is just a simple stage. Aren’t you overestimating her?”
“Don’t speak without experience! Even a simple challenge is dangerous. Besides, this little girl looks only five or six years old. That she’s survived on her own wit is impressive!”
“Everyone rush to Room 1’s stream! The little baby there actually survived in General Ling’s hands!”
At this comment, viewers flocked to Room 1’s livestream.
Room 1 housed the fiercest of the sinister spirits.
No one believed a mere infant could live through an encounter with General Ling.
Yet when they switched to Room 1’s stream, they were stunned.
On screen, a three-year-old toddler was crouched on the floor, scrubbing with a wet rag, puffing as she worked.
She wiped the floor, then wiped the sweat from her brow.
Her fair face was streaked with black and white smudges, making her look like an endearing little ragamuffin.
“So dirty! Poor Daddy, living in a place like this!”
“That’s the fiercest spirit in the sinister forest! You think he’s pitiful?”
“Silly child, that’s not dirt on the floor—that’s blood!”
“Is this kid a bit slow? Why is General Ling just sitting there, watching her?”
“Wow, doesn’t General Ling look even more handsome in that suit?”
Viewers kept pouring into Room 1’s livestream, and comments scrolled faster and faster.
Unaware of being watched, the little girl, Duoduo, kept puffing as she scrubbed the floor.
The room was stained with blood, with fresh patches here and there.
But to Duoduo, it was just dark dirt.
Ling Yun sat with one leg crossed, watching for a while.
Worried the little thing might exhaust herself, he suddenly stood and snatched the rag from her hands.
“Stop scrubbing.”
Duoduo paused and looked up with a dazed, innocent expression.
“I’m not tired,” she said.
Slowly understanding that her father cared for her, Duoduo grinned widely, delighted.
Dad was so good; she liked him more and more!
Caught reading her mind, Ling Yun frowned displeased.
“Who cares if you’re tired?”I'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
