Chapter 64: The Spirited Policewoman
Before long, the private room was left with nothing but echoes; the woman herself had vanished. Chen Erpao personally opened a bottle of imported liquor and sat beside the middle-aged man who had taken a beating, his face full of apology. “Boss, I’m truly sorry about earlier. Tonight’s drinks are all on me. I hope you won’t take it to heart—please come often in the future!”
The middle-aged man forced a nervous smile. “Just… just call me Old Zheng. We’re here to spend money tonight; I should pay. I’ll pay.”
Chen Erpao waved his hand. “No more talk. It’s on me. Come, let’s have a drink together!”
Seeing Chen Erpao so easygoing, Old Zheng no longer insisted. Gradually, as they spoke, he grew more at ease. It turned out the man’s name was Zheng Hai, the owner of a mid-sized clothing business. He did have money, but for honest men like him, the greatest fear after gaining wealth was always the underworld—gangsters and thugs.
When Zheng Hai left, Chen Erpao made a point to give him his phone number. After all, one could never know too many wealthy people.
In the blink of an eye, nearly half a month had passed. Tomorrow was the day Wang Xuemei’s grandmother was to arrive. Chen Erpao, who wouldn’t even blink at killing a man, found himself uncharacteristically nervous at the thought of meeting the elders—especially such an eccentric one. He doubted anyone would believe it if he told them.
That evening, when he returned home, Wang Xuemei was still busy cleaning, making sure everything was spotless and tidy. As soon as she saw Chen Erpao, she pouted in annoyance. “You men are all the same! Grandma’s coming tomorrow and you haven’t even helped me tidy up.”
Chen Erpao walked over and pulled her gently by the waist. “Your man’s been thinking all day about how best to welcome Grandma tomorrow. I’ve racked my brains till my head aches—yet you don’t seem to care.”
Wang Xuemei giggled mischievously. “At least you have some conscience. So, have you thought of a plan?”
He replied, “First, we’ll find a nice restaurant and enjoy a good meal. Then, in the afternoon, we’ll visit the zoo, and in the evening, we’ll pick a beautiful spot to admire Hong Kong’s night views. How’s that sound?”
“Sounds good.” Wang Xuemei beamed with satisfaction and gave him a quick peck on the lips. Yet that peck seemed to turn into glue; for a moment, they couldn’t part.
The next day, at a passenger pier in Hong Kong.
Wang Xuemei smiled cheerfully as she helped Chen Erpao straighten his tie. “You haven’t even tied your tie properly,” she chided.
“You insisted I buy this suit and wear a tie. I’m really not used to it,” he said.
“Hmph. I don’t want Grandma’s first impression of you to be bad. At least this looks proper!” She grinned.
“So you mean I wasn’t presentable before?” Chen Erpao feigned annoyance, pinching her nose. As they flirted, a passenger ferry slowly approached the dock.
Suddenly, Chen Erpao felt a sharp gaze fall upon him, accompanied by a faint but powerful aura.
“Grandma!” Wang Xuemei called out joyfully, running toward a sprightly, silver-haired woman in her sixties and embracing her tightly.
The old woman smiled kindly, appearing gentle and approachable, but Chen Erpao’s instincts screamed otherwise—this was undoubtedly the source of that formidable presence, a woman even he would hesitate to challenge.
He approached with a calm smile, greeting her respectfully and warmly. “Grandma.”
The old woman nodded in satisfaction, sizing him up. “You’re an impressive young man. Each generation surpasses the last. Although I sense a strong scent of blood on you, there’s no malice, which means you’re not a villainous sort.”
Chen Erpao smiled humbly. “Grandma flatters me.”
Hearing her grandmother’s praise, Wang Xuemei’s delight shone even brighter.
When the three reached the Mercedes parked by the roadside, a beautiful policewoman was standing by the hood, writing a ticket.
Chen Erpao was about to say something, but Wang Xuemei was faster, already standing by the officer. Sometimes, it was indeed easier for women to handle such matters with each other.
“Officer, we’re just picking someone up and will leave right away. Could you let us off with the ticket?” Wang Xuemei pleaded.
The policewoman glanced at Wang Xuemei, then at Chen Erpao, her tone displeased. “I am not ‘miss.’ Enforcing traffic regulations is my duty.”
As Chen Erpao drew near, he saw that the policewoman was as stunning as Wang Xuemei herself. Perhaps it was the uniform—she looked like the leading lady in a certain kind of film, sparking endless imagination. (Hong Kong police uniforms differ from those on the mainland; I’ve never seen mainland policewomen in skirts. At least I haven’t—sexy, especially on long-legged officers!)
“Xuemei, let it go. Let her write the ticket. It’s just a few hundred dollars,” Chen Erpao said offhandedly, patting her shoulder. Yet, to the beautiful policewoman, his words sounded completely different.
She glared at him. “Just a few hundred dollars, is it? So what if you’re rich? Driving an S-class Mercedes must mean you’ve got money! No wonder you think you can ignore the rules and park wherever you like.”
Faced with the indignant officer, Chen Erpao paused, a little uneasy. “You must be going through menopause—so much anger. They say you can’t provoke a woman in menopause, and now I see it’s true.” With that, he hurried Wang Xuemei and her grandmother into the car. “Best to leave quickly.”
The policewoman gritted her teeth, her anger making her chest heave, and she committed Chen Erpao’s face to memory, vowing that she’d make him pay next time.
The three sped off in the Mercedes, but Chen Erpao felt more anxious than relieved. If Wang Xuemei acted like that when her time came, what would he do? Never mind being Erpao—even he would be doomed.
