Mu Qingxi let out a soft hum and then fainted.

The two men who had just grabbed Mu Qingxi were stunned into silence by Wang Feiyan’s sudden action, their eyes wide with shock. Truly, a woman’s heart could be the most venomous! How could Mu Qingxi ever face anyone after this?

“What are you staring at? Let’s go,” Wang Feiyan said restlessly. Seeing the expressions on the men’s faces, she suddenly felt a surge of satisfaction. Furious, she shouted loudly, “How can my people sympathize with the enemy? That’s absolutely forbidden!”

The dim iron room was thick with dust that swirled up with the noise of the door opening and closing. Even the small bulbs by the entrance were knocked loose, scattering broken glass all over the floor.

Mu Qingxi lay on the ground, barely clinging to life. Whether from pain or anxiety, her labored breathing betrayed the faint but persistent pulse of her existence.

Bai Fanhao, running swiftly down the road, had intended to find Old Hou first to inform him and then decide what to do. But suddenly, a sharp pain gripped his chest, forcing him to halt in confusion. Why the sudden ache? Could it be from running too hard, blood rushing forcefully to his heart?

No, that shouldn’t be the case—he was a long-distance running champion after all. This short distance shouldn’t have caused any serious trouble.

After pondering, Bai Fanhao decided he should head to the mountain to take a look. Pulling out his phone, he dialed Old Hou.

Old Hou sat steadily in his chair, the phone resting on the table before him, waiting for any news from his brothers so he could be informed immediately.

Hearing the phone ring, Old Hou quickly answered. “What’s the situation?”

“This is Bai Fanhao. I think Xiao Xi is at that abandoned site. I’m heading there now. You all should come quickly.”

“Alright, Bai Fanhao. Stay safe—we’re on our way.”

Before Old Hou could finish speaking, the phone rang again with a busy signal. Without hesitation, he hastily gathered his things and shouted, “Second brother, go to the police station and find Chief Song. Tell him to mobilize the men and rush to that abandoned factory immediately.”

The second brother ran in and replied, “Yes,” before turning on his heel and dashing out. Old Hou reminded loudly, “Be sure to explain the situation clearly.”

“Got it!” came the swift response as he disappeared.

Old Hou couldn’t risk his brothers rushing in recklessly to save someone. If the police arrived knowing the details, his entire group could be wiped out. They absolutely had to rescue Xiao Xi, but no one could act recklessly.

Sitting upright, Old Hou felt time drag, every minute and second an agony. He was a close friend of Zuo Kun’s father and had fled here with Zuo Kun. They had met the kind-hearted Mu Qingxi and, after many trials, discovered that she and Zuo Kun were cousins. He cared for the young girl deeply.

He had no children of his own but felt an immediate kinship with Xiao Xi—their bond was genuine and unbreakable.

Zuo Kun also loved the girl dearly, repeatedly urging Old Hou to look after her well. He never imagined such a tragedy would unfold. It was unforgivable, and Old Hou felt at a loss for words.

In his heart, Old Hou prayed: “Please keep Xiao Xi safe. I can’t explain otherwise—not to myself, nor to Zuo Kun. Heaven above, please protect her from harm.”

Each of them prayed silently that Mu Qingxi would remain unharmed. Sitting crouched in the abandoned factory, Xi Haifei also prayed fervently for her safety.

Bai Fanhao, sprinting along the road, prayed as well, gasping for breath but running without hesitation.

Confined to bed, Mu Qingyang bit his lip until it bled, silently praying for his sister’s safety.

Only fragile Mu Qingxi lay there, pale and unconscious.
