Chapter 143: Amidst Self-Reproach
Xi Haifei stood at the airport entrance, thinking about everything that had happened recently—and about all that had taken place since the moment he had fallen in love with Mu Qingxi.
He felt that he was truly the source of it all. If not for him, Mu Qingxi would never have come to Wang Feiyan’s attention.
If not for him, Mu Qingxi would never have fallen victim to Wang Feiyan’s schemes, and Wang Feiyan would never have asked Bai Fanhao to pretend to pursue her.
If not for him, Bai Fanhao would never have met Mu Qingxi, much less genuinely fallen for her—even fallen in love with her.
If not for him, Mu Qingxi and Bai Fanhao would not now be lying there, utterly motionless.
……
Just as Xi Haifei was lost in thought, Zuo Kun emerged. Handsome and brimming with energy, Zuo Kun instantly lost his temper when he saw Xi Haifei’s disheveled appearance.
Walking over to him, Zuo Kun stood before him and said coldly, “Xi Haifei, how are you going to account for this? Where have you put your mind all this time? Do you really think she’s some kind of superhuman? Can’t all of you stop behaving like this? You’d better figure out the trouble you’ve caused. I’m not that patient.”
Only then did Xi Haifei slowly raise his head. He knew Zuo Kun was furious, but he also understood that Zuo Kun was not wrong. These disasters had all been brought about by him, and he had to resolve them himself. There was no room for argument—it really was his fault.
“Zuo Kun, I’m sorry. I brought her into this without dealing properly with Wang Feiyan’s situation first,” Xi Haifei apologized sincerely.
“You know I’m not trying to take my anger out on you. If you hadn’t stopped me again and again from dealing with Wang Feiyan, would what happened to Xiaoxi have happened? So I need you—and I also expect you to repent for the mistake you made.”
After calmly finishing these words, Zuo Kun made a call and said, “Uncle, I’ve just arrived. I’ll be over immediately.”
Then he glanced at Xi Haifei. “Come on. We’ll go together.”
Xi Haifei smiled faintly and nodded. Seeing Zuo Kun walking ahead, he followed behind, and together they left.
Whether it was a blessing or a disaster, what was meant to happen could not be avoided. Yet Xi Haifei knew all too well that this time it was neither a blessing nor a disaster. He was merely going to face something he had always been unwilling to confront.
At the Public Security Bureau, Wang Feiyan sat in silence. No matter how many questions they asked, she refused to say a word. She only stared blankly ahead as the interrogator sitting before her grew alternately agitated, speechless, and furious.
Director Song watched the situation from the monitoring room and realized that nothing more could be extracted from Wang Feiyan. He waved a hand, and the officer seated before the monitor said, “The interrogation is over. You may come out.”
The interrogator stared at Wang Feiyan’s utterly unresponsive face for a moment, then left with the officer taking notes.
Wang Feiyan watched them go, tugged faintly at the corner of her mouth, and let out a cold snort. Then she returned to her vacant, foolish expression and sat motionless once more.
After leaving, the two officers went to the monitoring room. As soon as they entered, they said to Director Song, “Director, she won’t talk. We couldn’t get a single word out of her.”
Director Song said he had seen as much. He fell silent and began considering what to do. After thinking for a long while, he asked, “I told you to investigate. What did you find?”
The officer who had conducted the interrogation replied, “Director, once we started investigating, we realized there was far more to this than we expected!”
Director Song looked puzzled. He took the documents handed to him and began reading them carefully.
Indeed, what they had discovered through their investigation was astonishing.
