Chapter 108: A Meaningful Glance
The homeroom teacher on the platform said furiously, “How many times have I told you not to be late for my class? How many times have you been late?”
Mu Qingxi kept her head bowed and replied softly, “Teacher Kong, just this once.”
Teacher Kong had been about to lecture her further, but when he heard Mu Qingxi’s words, his expression changed at once, and the rest of his reprimand caught in his throat. Then his tone softened a little as he said, “Then let’s not talk about being late. Leaving your homework unsubmitted now and then is one thing, but how many times have you been daydreaming in my class?”
Just then, Qin Yu, who had arrived even later, muttered under his breath, “It’s not like we were daydreaming that much.”
Teacher Kong immediately snapped, “Not daydreaming? Whispering to each other like that, and you think I didn’t see?”
Qin Yu shrank his neck and looked at the homeroom teacher with a somewhat wronged expression.
Mu Qingxi at his side hurriedly said, “Teacher Kong, we really weren’t whispering to each other. We were just exchanging looks. Just eye contact, that’s all.”
As soon as Qin Yu heard that, he quickly chimed in, “Right, right. We weren’t whispering. We just wrote a few notes now and then and exchanged a few looks, that’s all. Teacher, we weren’t nearly as bad as you said...”
Hearing Qin Yu’s words, Mu Qingxi’s eyelid twitched hard. Good grief!
Dear Qin Yu, could you please not be so adorably honest? Why are you saying everything out loud? This is not the time for truth, all right? Can we please stop talking? I’m beaten, truly beaten!
She could already foresee the tragic fate awaiting her today.
So it really was true that the morning made the day. If she had not been robbed by her younger brother this morning, she would not be suffering like this. She had only just arrived when she was blocked at the classroom door by the homeroom teacher, and now, because of a single sentence from Qin Yu, she was about to be marched to the office.
She hurriedly bumped the Qin Yu beside her. He cried out softly and fell silent at once, turning to look at her in confusion.
She frantically signaled with her eyes, telling him not to speak anymore.
That was hardly speaking at all; it was pouring oil on the fire. She was nearly defeated by Qin Yu. Dear, could we please stop telling the truth?
Qin Yu seemed to understand the meaning in her eyes and sent a look back, as though saying, “Aren’t you telling the truth too?”
Seeing the aggrieved Qin Yu, she felt miserable. She flashed him another look: “How is that the truth? I was just changing the subject. What you did was pure fuel on the flames.”
After she conveyed this, she saw Qin Yu tightly shut his mouth, looking even more wronged.
She was exasperated and could only stare at him. “At a time like this, you’re still acting pitiful? Don’t you know we’re about to die?”
At last, the students in the classroom could no longer hold it in. They burst into laughter.
Qin Yu belatedly looked around at them. Everyone was laughing; some were simply amused, while others were openly enjoying the spectacle.
Take Xu Ting, for instance. The corner of her mouth curled upward in mockery as she looked at Mu Qingxi and Qin Yu by the door.
And the boys who sided with Xu Ting were also watching them with gleeful delight.
“Self-study today,” Teacher Kong said. Then, with a sharp smack, he slammed the book on the lectern shut.
When he strode out of the classroom, Mu Qingxi and Qin Yu hurriedly stepped aside to let him pass through the middle.
Just as they were about to breathe out at the sight of his furious departing back, another voice came, forcing the two of them to swallow that breath back down. In a stern tone, Teacher Kong said, “You two, come to the office with me.”
Seeing his retreating back, the two of them were just about to finish exhaling when Teacher Kong suddenly turned around again.
A cough.
A cough.
Mu Qingxi and Qin Yu both coughed at the same time. Teacher Kong ignored the two flushed, coughing students and said, “You too. Come along.”
